During the process of printing the surface of papers and printing rolls is constantly changing as well as the chemical composition and the physical behaviour of the printing ink is. Surface structures in the micrometer range on printing rolls, by their size and their shape, not only determine the final color in RGB and CMYK color shemes but also the final visual appearance of text and images printed. The size and the geometry of the printing roll structures are depending on different printing methodologies. Parameters for the appearance can be determined by designing and verifying the roll surface structure and, by this, can be used to adjust printing processes to very different materials yet providing the same look and feel. Solarius metrology can contribute to the manufacturing and the monitoring of printing roll surfaces as well as by analyzing paper surface charateristics.
